@morninkaufy: Replying to @Mai Linh #fypシ #marathon #Running #runtokcommunity #runtok Of course this is case by case, but I’m speaking purely from experience. I’ve done two full Ironmans and qualified for Kona, I’ve run 22 marathons and 6 ultras, and I’ve used everything from premade plans to Runna to high-level coaches, so I’ve seen every side of training. Runna works for a lot of people, and I’m happy for it, it’s cheap, easy, and gives you structure, which is great for beginners, but it’s still an AI-generated plan with your name on it, not a truly personal coaching system. It doesn’t know your sweat rate, your nutrition needs, your fueling strategy, your strength imbalances, your weaknesses, your injury patterns, your running form, your fatigue, your confidence, your mindset, or the race strategies you need for different courses. It doesn’t teach you why you’re doing the workouts you’re doing, and it can’t support you the way a human can. A real coach can adjust your plan, read your body, hold you accountable, guide you mentally, and customize every detail of your training in a way an app never will. It’s the difference between getting a last meal made by Gordon Ramsay versus grabbing McDonald’s, you’ll get food either way, but only one gives you true quality. If you want to be good, an app might work or if you don’t care about running much/just starting to run. If you want to be your best, have a good experience, build confidence etc then human coaching will always win.

I just switched from Runna to Garmin Coach because I started with and have used Runna for 2 years now and I've been injured so many times and have only hit 1 of my goals. It's been a huge adjustment going from pace + miles to effort or heart rate + time.

Runna’s been a game changer for me! It is more affordable for me than a coach, and I’ve become such a stronger runner because of it. The pacing is super realistic too, as long as you stay within your true capabilities and don’t push too far, which is why I think a lot of people get injured. I have had to alter my plans multiple times bc of that

I used Runna to run NYC 2 years post heart transplant. It was not my first marathon but I haven’t run in 12 years. But of course I knew it’s just an app and took it for what it was. I thought it good for what it is. I ran strong for an old lady with a new heart.

i used it for my first marathon and i enjoyed the convenience, the interface was nice and it connected with my watch. I ended up getting injured about 6 weeks out and i can’t say it was runna’s fault but i can’t believe it didn’t have an impact. I am now paying a very affordable coach for my next marathon. i also hate AI so there’s that

Good points well made. I can never hate runna because it got me into the sport. I completed 5k, 10k, HM & M plans. Met and exceeded my goals and enjoyed the varied workouts. I think a lot of the issues come down to user error, particularly not taking the easy days truly easy and pushing the pace beyond workout recommendations, assuming faster must mean better. I’ve since graduated from using Runna to creating my own plans but I think for the most part it is a good product that has a place. As you said, it can work well but if you want to be competitive it can only really take you so far.

I respect this. I will say, though, that I’ve had a great experience with Runna. In six months, I’ve gone from not being able to run even .25 miles to regularly doing 15+ mile long runs each weekend. My mile time is now in the single digits and I have a Half and a Full Marathon under my belt. All in 6 months. And I have Runna to credit. I think it’s really helpful if you do it right.

i’ve used the app for my last half marathon and am using it for the one i’m training for now too bc i thought it worked well. for my first one i used the nike run club plan. i feel like saying a running plan app like runna isn’t as good as having a personal coach is obvious and i don’t think people would argue that but i think for being an app, runna is more customizable the most i have looked at

I think Runna can be great when you have self awareness. I personally use it and love it, but in not afraid to adjust my plan if I’m having a rough time recovering or feel my mileage is too high. I also come from a background of very heavy weightlifting before I got into running. I add strength days in my Runna program, but go off of something I built for myself and don’t use their actual “strength” plan, as I feel it’s not productive for me. I also know my body and strengths/weaknesses enough to know what adjustments I should make. I cannot justify the cost of a running coach right now, but use Runna with my own knowledge I’ve gained over the years. I took 43 minutes off my marathon in a year. It also takes a lot of the thinking out of training, as I can just press “start workout” on my watch and go with the paces as it tells me to for intervals and such. I have a big brain job and use running to turn my brain off. Would I love a running coach? Absolutely. But this is what I can justify right now. That being said, I would NEVER recommend it to a new runner or someone who has never followed a training plan before. I also would never recommend it to someone who can’t pace themselves or understand what their limits are and how to listen to their body. It CAN be a good tool when used properly, but I do think it’s overused by people who are unprepared.

As someone that uses Runna, I agree with every point you’ve said. To get the best effect from the app you have to know your metrics( ie sweat rate, fueling) and how your feeling because it cannot account for that. I mainly use it for the structure and paces. I would love a coach but I’m a broke college student whose not good enough for college sports.

I used Runna for a little and it was TERRIBLE. The paces it wanted me to hit were so unrealistic. If I kept up with it, I would have gotten injured. AI is not a replacement for a real coach.

Runna is the only reason I’ve been able to get myself running, love that I can start my run on my watch and not having to think at all, think it’s amazing if you struggle to motivate yourself on that end - I could never get myself to run, I couldn’t run a minute without stopping when I started and now I’ve run a half marathon ☺

I stopped supporting Runna after a popular British running influencer ran the NY marathon last year despite being badly injured and not having been able to train properly. She/they had a great opportunity to talk about injury management and instead she spent 8 hours crying and hurting just to complete the course.

I will start out by saying runna is perfect for the casual runner someone who is okay with staying in the 8-10 minute mile range. I used runna for my second marathon and it helped me shave off 10 minutes to my time. I will say when originally starting my plan I had my goal a little too fast for my abilities and after logging 2 weeks of training and not hitting that pacing Runna flagged that and increased my finish time increasing my paces for the rest of the program I will also say I injured myself not using runna and when using the app I never felt better. It may not be as personal as getting a coach but for me it's not that serious I'm not going out trying to win the marathons and I enjoy what runna can offer for me
