At today's silver prices ($48/oz as I'm making this), a 1965-1970 coin has about $7 worth of silver, while pre-1965 coins have about $17 worth of silver each. The process is simple: Get $500 worth of half dollars from any bank, sort through them for silver, keep the silver ones, and return the rest to the bank. You can tell the difference by sound - silver coins ring differently than copper-nickel coins. You can also see the difference visually - silver coins don't have the copper edge that modern coins have. Out of $500 worth of half dollars, I found two silver coins worth $23 total. That's a 4.6% return just from spending an hour coin roll hunting. Most people walk past free money every day. Banks have silver sitting in their vaults and they'll trade it to you at face value.
