One thing I’ve learned raising Brett is sometimes the little adjustments inside your home can completely change your quality of life. ❤️ Brett loves his “sippy puppies,” but he chews on them constantly, so we go through quite a few of them. Instead of telling us he needs a refill, he has his own way of communicating — he’ll walk up to the half wall and drop or toss the cup toward us to let us know it’s empty. 😂 Over the years you start learning their language without words. Another thing Brett likes to do is take a bite or two of food at the half wall, then wander off to watch TV or pace around for a minute before coming back for another bite. Sitting still for long periods just isn’t really his thing. Honestly, the half wall has become one of my favorite things we’ve done in our home. It helps keep Brett safe while still making him feel included in everyday family life. I can cook, clean, talk to him, interact with him, and keep eyes on him all at the same time. It doesn’t feel like he’s separated from us — it feels like he’s still part of everything going on. A lot of families with special needs children end up making little custom changes to their homes and routines that outsiders may not understand, but those small changes can make daily life less stressful, safer, and honestly more enjoyable for everyone involved. Sometimes you stop trying to force the world to work “normally” and start building a world that works better for your family.
