No what? Your brain does care what you think you are, but only if you follow it up with action—that’s neuroplasticity. If all you do is mentally masturbate, constantly think about all you could be and take no action over it, your brain won’t develop neural pathways or adapt itself to become that version of you, which is exactly what Hebbianism and behaviorism demonstrates. So yes, while it’s true that it won’t listen to a bunch of noise you make in your head (thoughts that aren’t followed up by action), if you just follow it up with action and prove to your brain that this is the only option, then it’ll adapt as a “survival tactic,” consistent with both self-perception theory and the enactivist view that identity forms through repeated engagement, not daydreaming. Even embodied cognition supports this: the body’s actions shape the mind more reliably than imagination alone. So just act.
