@thefat_electrician1: Peeling back the layers of history reveals a not-so-heroic tale of General MacArthur. While he's praised for his vow to return to the Philippines during World War II, was it truly a courageous act? Or is it a rewriting of history shrouded in self-serving glory? Explore claims of his failure to protect American forces and the controversial choices that led to significant casualties among his men. Dive deep into the complexities of military leadership, accountability, and the often-unseen sacrifices made in the shadows of fame. This perspective might just change the way you see a so-called hero. #MacArthur #MilitaryHistory #WWII #Leadership #Controversy
It goes back further for me when he ordered his men to attack ww1 veterans in Washington DC

I'm a military historian and I can attest that you are absolutely correct. Mac was an egotistical spot lighter who really contributed very little to the success of the Pacific campaign, except as a symbol.

Agreed...MacArthur was so overrated. He used the US Army to crush the Bonus marcher. He allowed his aircraft to be destroyed on the ground the day after Pearl Harbor. He denied the insurgency was happening in the Philippines. He denied the Korean War was happening, even when there was clear evidence it was happen. When he finally admitted the North crossed the 38th parallel, he sent task force Smith(about 400 troops) and allowed them to be wiped out. He was more concerned that his troops looked good instead making sure they were properly trained for the Korean war. Definitely overrated.

He wasted so many lives taking back the Philippines when the reality is that we could have focused everything to take the home islands and ended the war sooner.

I'm so glad someone else is saying it. Dugout Doug was such a glory hound, from killing vets after WW1 to covering up his mistakes in both WW2 and Korea. Dude was one of the worst generals in terms of ego we ever had

No disrespect & I’m not disagreeing with you, but sacrificing subordinates to accomplish the objective is what Generals do. Grant & Lee sacrificed them by the tens of thousands, the men loved them. I only met a few generals in my time of service, they all were arrogant. But during McCarthur’s time how’d his men feel about him? Would they follow him? Or was he a Braxton Bragg?

Supposedly when MacArthur waded ashore “someone” had planted a sign nearby that said “With the help of God and a few Marines, MacArthur got back to the Philippines”
