@bubbarutherford: A lot of times people want to get started in the cattle business so they go out and buy the slickest and youngest cattle they can find. While that sounds nice, if that cow doesn’t have experience raising a calf, and you don’t have much experience as a rancher, you can have a lot of issues come up that put you in a bind! That’s why I recommend if you’re looking for cattle that are going to be a little bit easier to get some experience with, I would start out with an older cow that’s already had a few healthy calves so you won’t have as many problems! #cattleranch #newfarm #agriculture #heifer #livestock
This is the best relationship advice I’ve ever heard.

In my experience heifers have a 50-50 shot of walking off and leaving the calf or staying with it

We bought a 9 yo black angus that has calved. How much longer you think she’ll calve for us?

heifers are no good for a beginner. Steers, or stockers aren't either. get older cows that have had calves and if you can get bred cattle.

Buy older cows that have had some cows that have had some calves. Those cows will be good to get you started. Heifers are the ones that have most of the calving problems

Starting with heifers is a nightmare. Don’t start with pulling and tough mothers
