American cheese, the real stuff from the deli, use spread mayo edge to edge on the bread instead of butter, and wonder bread or white sandwich bread. Tomato soup is required. Iced tea optional.

My go to grilled cheese strat is, lightly butter the inside of the bread, both slices, then add a bit of shredded sharp cheddar cheese, then add a slice of American cheese, then grill the sandwich normally. It has the nostalgic texture but with added flavor from the cheddar.
