@pangpangandwang: I grew up in a small town as a first gen immigrant. Part of it was not seeing many powerfully confident, stylish, and clever asian role models, and part of it was my own doing and being so shy. The smaller I made myself, the safer I felt. But it also became a quiet belief that maybe I was meant to be small. That safety became a cage and it took years to realize I could just walk out. Now I think of younger me who thought “people like me don’t do that”and want to tell her you were never strange for feeling you were meant for more. You were just becoming.
