I also think Victor's relationship with nature was super interesting. He uses it as a coping mechanism to deal with the guilt but also finds that nature doesn't bring him joy when he is obsessed with his project. Clerval is able to bring Victor happiness again when they admire nature together. And the creature often admires the moon and birdsong. I thought it was cool especially considering the romantic poets and the sublime movement :)

I read Frankenstein for the first time last month and it is one of my favorites of all time! I also got the 1831 version but I just got a 200th anniversary edition that is “annotated for scientists, engineers, and creators of all kinds” that is the 1818 version. I’m reading it now to see the differences but I adore it already. Also I am a Victor hater to my core

Some praise for the Netflix version: probably the closest adaption I’ve seen onscreen also perhaps a reference to the Burke and Hare. Didn’t like the overuse of poor CGI and Isaac’s dialect was very hammy. The script felt the need to strip the nuance of the horror (going as far to call Victor the true monster; well…that’s quite literally the point). It did feel heavily compressed given its two hour run time I felt it could have held back and alluded more.

I still am in the middle of reading Frankenstein. but I'm wondering if the aspect of fate is moreso tied to scientific determinism

Have you seen the Guillermo del Toro film on Netflix? What did you think of it compared to the book?☺
