A fighter jet built for war was suddenly given a very different mission: save the life of a five-month-old baby. On December 23 1986, Andrew De La Pena was critically ill in California and desperately needed a heart transplant. More than 1,500 miles away in Fargo, North Dakota, four-month-old Michael McCann had died and his parents made the decision to donate his organs. Michael’s heart was matched with Andrew. But after the heart was removed, disaster struck. The Learjet that was supposed to carry it back to California wouldn’t start in the bitter cold. Doctors were working against an expected four-hour window. At around 2:30 a.m., North Dakota Governor George Sinner was contacted for help. He authorized an extraordinary solution: scramble a North Dakota Air National Guard F-4 Phantom II. Pilot 1st Lt. Robert Becklund flew alone because the heart, packed in ice inside a cooler, needed the F-4’s second seat. At 3:06 a.m., the fighter blasted out of Fargo and headed for California. After a 3-hour 15-minute flight, the heart reached the Stanford team. Around 7½ hours after being removed from its donor, the heart was successfully transplanted into Andrew by pioneering surgeon Dr. Norman Shumway. At the time, it was reportedly the longest a donor heart had remained outside a body and still been successfully transplanted. Andrew survived. More than 20 years later, he reunited with some of the people behind the remarkable mission that saved his life.
