⚠️ I almost convinced myself I was imagining it. He was in the mist of having a stroke and I almost missed… Little did I know 4/22/26 would be his last day of school. That morning, Gael woke up smiling. He laughed. He talked. He seemed like himself. But something about his walk felt… different. He looked like he was putting more weight on his right leg than his left. I remember thinking, “No. You’re just anxious. You’re overreacting.” So I sent him to school. A short time later, the school nurse called. She told me he couldn’t hold anything in his left hand. He kept dropping everything. My heart sank. I left immediately and called my husband hysterically crying because deep down, I knew. An MRI confirmed what I feared. Our 5-year-old was having his second stroke. We spent a week in the hospital. Just days after coming home, he had a third stroke. This time, I didn’t hesitate. I called 911. One of the paramedics asked me, “How do you know he is having a stroke?” I looked at him and said, “Because this isn’t my first time.” Minutes earlier, Gael had been playing. Then he suddenly became dizzy, lost his balance, and collapsed to the floor. The MRI confirmed another stroke. I wish someone had taught me B.E.F.A.S.T. years ago. 🧠 Balance – sudden loss of balance or coordination 👀 Eyes – sudden vision changes or double vision 🙂 Face – facial drooping 💪 Arms – weakness or numbness 🗣️ Speech – slurred speech or difficulty speaking ⏰ Time – call 911 immediately. Children can have strokes too.
