A Black-owned startup is designing a privacy-first phone that's solar-assisted and built to be repaired, not replaced. The company is Cioré, pronounced "core," and it was founded by Chrissy Gilmore. It's building its own operating system, the software that runs a phone, and the company says it won't track you in the background or sell your data. The phone is being designed to be modular, so you could replace one worn-out part instead of the whole phone. It's also solar-assisted, and the team is exploring small battery top-ups from sunlight, indoor light, and warmth from daily use. Her team is exploring Gaia, an indicator for when an app may be using AI. It's also designing the phone for accessibility from the start. According to the company, its community raised $10,085 to fund the first stage of prototyping. Its website lists where $9,800 of it went, line by line, including $3,791 on materials and 3D printing. Cioré is being shaped by its community, and the team says expandable storage could be practical for a future version. The company says it will be open about what it's building, where it stands, and what comes next. Cioré says most smartphones are built to extract attention, and that people are pressured to buy a new phone every year.
