Nobody ever decides to ruin their life. Nobody wakes up and thinks, 'Right, today I am going to destroy my marriage, my house, or my job'. And yet people do this all of the time, not necessarily in a catastrophic moment of madness, but through a thousand tiny decisions, none of which seem to matter that much at the time. The economist Alfred Kahn calls this the ‘tyranny of small decisions.’ And this is where each choice, taken alone, does not seem to make that much difference. You skip going to the gym, you stay at work late one more time, you look at your phone rather than attending to your partner. No single decision is the problem, but put together, and over many months and years, they build a life you never actually wanted to choose. Kahn originally applied this to economics, where individual consumer decisions can end up destroying entire industries, or even a community, when no one intended that to happen. For example, let’s say I buy a coffee at Starbucks ‘just one time.’ It is quick, it is easy, and I am just one person. But everyone I know does it ‘just one time,’ and so we are all sad and surprised when the local coffee shop goes out of business. But the principle is universal. A relationship does not often end in an act of betrayal. It ends with a thousand acts of neglect. Health does not degrade overnight. It degrades with every cigarette that we take. The tyranny of small decisions teaches us to watch these small things that we do so often, because a lot of small things can build up into something big, and often unresolvable. Every decision matters, and every choice we make defines the life we have to live. If our decisions are like bricks, we have to make sure we are building the kind of home we want to live in.
