Brassicas are plants in the cabbage family such as kale, sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli and cabbages. They can be tricky to grow: they are loved by pests and they are hungry plants so they start to look sad in their pots pretty quickly if they don’t have access to enough nutrients. Here are my 3 tips to help you grow your best brassicas! 🌱 Protect your brassicas from pests. Sow seeds into module trays or pots first & allow them to grow big and strong before planting them out. This is because big, strong healthy plants are more likely to resist and recover from pest attacks than tiny weedy ones. Once you have planted them out, continue to protect your brassicas from pests. Every year I grow nasturtiums with my brassicas, as they act as a sacrificial plant, tempting the dreaded caterpillars away from my cabbages. I also use netting where necessary (install this carefully to make sure birds cant get trapped in it) and I check my plants regularly for pest infestations so that I can intervene where necessary. 🌱 Make sure your brassicas have enough nutrients. The downside to starting bassicas off in pots is that they run out of nutrients quite quickly. Keep an eye on them, and if you notice the leaves starting to discolour take this as your sign to pot them up with some nice rich compost! 🌱 Take out insurance. Inevitably we will lose a few brassicas along the way. Sowing a few extras will leave you with back ups! And remember - we’re not aiming for perfection! A few holes in the leaves are no big deal, they will still taste just as good 😊 #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #cabbages #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden
