@helipilotleigh: The best way to survive is to avoid the situation entirely, but if you fly coastal mountains, the reality is at some point you may find yourself with limited visibility and no suitable landing spot. Slow down. Don’t outfly your visibility. Just like driving at night…you don’t outdrive the visibility of your headlights. Number one rule is to NEVER EVER go inadvertent IMC. If you do, you WILL experience spatial disorientation and there is a HIGH probability you won’t survive. The 5 C’s don’t work here…you cannot go inadvertent IMC and expect to be able to climb out of it. You cannot climb high enough for communications or radar coverage. Instead, do this: Slow down, Go down, and most importantly, don’t lose Visual Reference to the ground….EVER. This is remote Alaska…NOT in a wire environment. Class Golf, clear of clouds. We have full visibility out the right side…just using this wispy fog base layer on the left to simulate a limited visibility situation and practice how to stay alive. When the weather catches you, you can always slow down and maybe do a 180
