my waist got TINNNNY when i *stopped* doing ab exercises altogether, used compound movements that engaged my core, and did either 10k steps a day or 30min on the stairmaster. never saw my waist get smaller in a smaller amt of time than by doing just those 3 things

i’m afraid that hour-glass shape is just genetics. training your obliques won’t make you look “boxy”. the obliques are such small muscles that even working them out consistently, even with weights, won’t grow them big enough to widen your waist. it honestly just comes to down to your genetics.

Don’t forget about genetics/bone structure. There are people who barely workout and just naturally have that waist shape. And people like me who just have a more straight midsection 😭, but working upper & lower body helps create an hourglass illusion for me. If I don’t work obliques a little, the sides of my torso will just be soft and undefined

Your rib cage plays a huge role in waist shape. Some people naturally have a wider or more flared rib cage, which makes the waist look a little boxier. I don’t think training your obliques are making you boxier , unless your training them super heavy like a bodybuilder

i hear you, but as a 5'0" rectangular filipino gym girly, it's bc of genetics. I'm literally the smallest/leanest I've ever been, like visible abs and barely any fat over my ribs, and my waist is still just 🧍‍♀️

Wait so I actyally have had this thought as well, I do hot yoga and hot Pilates, and they’ll cue a lot of side planks and stuff like that and I want to stop cause it trains your obliques but idk what to do instead when they cue that… any tips?
