But some people don't like it. And I don't either.

Prescriptive and mechanical approaches are destroying literature, I swear. It's a horrible brain rot and out of step with the history of the language and our body of writing over centuries!

Well, that’s something I’ve learned today. I’ve never thought that was grammatically correct.

Starting a sentence with a coordinating conjunction lives with the Oxford comma in my head… both give me the heebie jeebies 🤣

I ask my year 5s to not start any sentence with a coordinating conjunction just so they keep it clear in their heads that they join equal clauses. I have found sentences like “But they didn’t.” in writing otherwise. I do tell them that you can do it and authors do. Should I ease up it? 🫣

I feel like that was taught because kids would often write a partial sentence, and leave off the independent clause.

Legally it's okay. But it's morally reprehensible 😁. And I wouldn't do it. 😅

Depends on what you're writing... Formal publication (i.e. books), hard NO... Informal messaging (i.e. social media), go for it!

Writing a scientific article? No. Writing fiction? Yes. As you said. I've been known to try different styles for a newspaper column... And gotten feedback for stylistic details 🙄
