@jess_happy_smallholding: This is my willow bed which I grow to use the material for making living willow structures like my living willow hedge and my living willow duck tent. You can also use it for crafting projects such as making wreaths or basket weaving but I haven’t learned how to weave a basket yet. I planted my willow bed in February 2024. By the end of that summer it had grown to 8ft tall. I cut it all back in February and used that material for my projects, and now it’s grown to 8ft tall again, and even taller in places. Willow is easy to grow from cuttings because it roots really easily. Once you have one plant, you can make more more plants by taking cuttings of it. The best time to plant willow cuttings is between December and March, during the dormant season when there are no leaves on the trees. The first step is to source your willow cuttings. If you want to grow it for crafting projects make sure you choose a variety that’s suitable for basket weaving. We got our willow cuttings online and grow two varieties called Harrisons and Yelverton. Prepare the ground by laying cardboard and woodchip. You could use a weed membrane if you prefer. Then simply push your willow cuttings into the ground, planting them 60cm apart in all directions. Keep well watered during dry spells in their first year, and cut them back to the ground every year during the dormant season (between November and March when there’s no leaves). #willow #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants

for your living structures like fences, do you find that you struggle with Willow popping up elsewhere than where you want it?

You are a very good communicator and teacher, thank you so much for the inspiration. We've been considering willow for a while, next year might be the year!

How good does the soil have to be ? I have some clean fill that’s had bush mulch ( Australia ) on the top. I have a black shrub variety of willow just coppiced it today so I stuck it in this raised bed I have as per above conditions , will it take ?

So, in theory I could use this as a way to block the sun from one side of my house since it grows so thick and quickly?
