The S-400
The S-400 "Triumph" is a fourth-generation+ long-range air defense system manufactured in Russia by Almaz-Antey. Known to NATO as the SA-21 Growler, it is considered one of the most advanced air defense systems in the world. ⚙️ Components and Technology The system operates via an integrated network that includes: • A mobile command post (55K6E): for battle management and target allocation. • Multiple radars: such as the long-range detection radar (91N6E) with a range of up to 600 km, the targeting radar (92N6E), and the low-altitude target detection radar (96L6E). • Launch platforms (up to 8): each carrying 4 missiles, for a total of 48 missiles ready for launch. It is highly flexible; it can integrate external radars and operate with other systems such as the S-300 and Pantsir-S1. 🚀 Missile Types The true strength lies in the diversity of its missiles, creating a multi-layered defense: • 40N6E: Very long range (up to 400 km) for targeting AWACS aircraft. • 48N6E3/DM: Long range (250 km) for countering ballistic missiles and aircraft. • 9M96E2: Medium range (120 km) for intercepting fast-moving targets. • 9M96E: Short range (40 km) for self-defense against close-range threats. 🌍 Users and International Deployment • Russia: The backbone of its air defense, protecting Moscow, Kaliningrad, Syria, and other regions. • China: The first export customer (circa 2018). • India: Ordered 5 batteries in a contract worth $5.43 billion; deliveries began in 2021. Turkey: A controversial $2.5 billion deal in 2017 made it the first NATO member to acquire the system.
