Homeless people are rarely normal people who had a home but are down on thier luck. I've worked extensively with the homeless nearly all of them fall into 3 categories: 1) Mentally ill 2) Drug addicts 3) Both

Finally people are saying it lmao. The one claiming we’re “all just one missed paycheck” away from becoming street homeless have clearly never interacted with them. Who will literally throw bottles and feces at you for trying to give them food. The good ones are in shelters. The ones on the street are those who refuse to comply with shelter rules which are always just 1) don’t do drugs, 2) don’t be violent.

I could couch surf for long enough to get back on my feet. To be on the streets you have to have spent years alienating every person in your life. I am poor but I am not close to being homeless.

There's gotta be a fundamental difference. Half of my family has generational poverty and none of them were ever homeless.

I have read studies, which you can find with Google, that shows homelessness correlates closely with housing affordability.

The people you’re mentioning all probably have safety nets. A lot of homeless people lost their jobs and didn’t have enough savings. If you have people you can move in with when times are bad (parents, siblings, friends) you are insanely privileged. A lot of homeless people are foster care youth that aged out. If you lost your job and couldn’t one that paid enough for your apartment in time before your savings depleted, where would you go?

Imagine if down on their luck people got the full resources that are currently being wasted on people that won't leave the streets.

Holy straw man Batman. Studies show that housing first solutions fix homelessness better and cheaper than any other solution. At that point it doesn’t matter why they are homeless, we know the solution. Anecdotally I’ve been homeless, and work with the homeless. Incredibly easy for it to happen, many of them are seniors living on fixed social security incomes which aren’t keeping up with increasing rental costs.

People that have been homeless and gotten out of it will tell you, almost everyone that's homeless is a drug addict and/or unwilling to get help. There are a lot of systems in place to help people, even if it takes a while, but it does require some level of initiative.

My local dive bar made the mistake of gaining a reputation of being kind to the homeless. Next thing you know people are being badgered and cussed out for a cigarette, or they would set up camp in front of the bar and ask for money for food because they’re hungry. But they don’t want food, just money. They were out there all times of the day and night. It drove away business and now they had to close up for good.

I work in a county with some of the best programs for homeless people in the region. They’re so good infact other cities will buy their homeless people bus tickets to come here. They don’t even try
