WW1. World War I: The Catastrophe That Reshaped the World What Was World War I World War I (August 1, 1914 – November 11, 1918) was the first great international conflict of the 20th century — a devastating war fought primarily in Europe but with consequences that reached every corner of the globe. Contemporaries called it "The Great War," for its scale and destructiveness exceeded anything that had come before. The war pitted two great coalitions against each other: the Allied Powers (Britain, France, Russia, Serbia, Japan, later joined by Italy and the United States) versus the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, later joined by the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria). Fighting spread beyond Europe to Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Pacific islands — and for the first time in history, combat unfolded in the air as well as on land and sea. Thirty-eight countries took part — out of fifty-nine independent states in the world at the time — involving roughly two-thirds of the global population. Around 70 million men were mobilized, and the front lines stretched 2,500 to 4,000 kilometers. The war killed roughly 10 million soldiers and wounded 20 million more, while millions of civilians perished from hunger and disease. The Deep Roots of the War World War I did not break out by accident. It was the product of decades of accumulating political, economic, colonial, and military tensions among the great powers of Europe. In the words of historians, it was an imperialist war fought to redivide a world that had already been divided. The Standoff Between Two Blocs By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Europe had split into two opposing alliance systems. The Triple Alliance took shape in 1882, linking Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. After unification, Germany rose rapidly to become Europe's leading industrial power and began demanding a global role commensurate with its strength — a place in the sun. But Germany unified late, and the world had already been carved up by the older colonial empires of Britain and France. This left Germany increasingly resentful of the existing international order. The Triple Entente emerged gradually between 1904 and 1907. First came the Franco-Russian Alliance (1891–1894), then the Entente Cordiale between Britain and France (1904), and finally the Anglo-Russian Convention (1907). Britain had traditionally pursued a policy of "splendid isolation," but Germany's rapid naval expansion and industrial competition pushed London toward alignment with France and Russia. Core Conflicts and Clashing Interests Anglo-German rivalry was the pivotal confrontation. Germany's pace of industrialization unsettled Britain, but even more alarming was Germany's rapid naval buildup — a direct challenge to the maritime supremacy on which British power rested. Germany also sought to challenge Britain's global colonial position, especially in the Middle East and Africa. Franco-German hostility was rooted in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. After its defeat, France was forced to cede Alsace and Lorraine, a humiliation it never forgot. France waited for the moment to reclaim the lost territories and to contain further German expansion. Russo-Austrian rivalry centered on the Balkans. Austria-Hungary sought to expand its influence there and suppress Slavic nationalist movements, while Russia saw itself as the protector of all Slavs — a direct collision of interests. Austria-Hungary's annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1908 further inflamed the Balkan powder keg. German-Russian tensions were also escalating. Germany feared Russia's rapid industrialization — if Russia's human capital were combined with industrial capacity, Germany would face an unbeatable eastern rival. German military and political circles began discussing the possibility of a preemptive strike. Beyond these, the struggle for colonies, markets, and raw materials spanned the globe: in Morocco (the crises of 1905 and 191 #ww1 #france #russia #germany #austrohungary
