I’d even go as far to say that having a mirror in the room makes it not yoga

I took the most awesome class at MSU called “the history of yoga” and it changed me! A multi-million dollar industry inspired by asceticism is comical. Saying “namaste” after a sculpt class…idk..

as a teacher, agree 100%!! i was shocked to learn that some ytt schools don’t even require you to read the Bhagavad Gita! one of the foundational yoga texts! truly insane and honestly sad, because yoga in it’s fullest form is just sooo rich with history and incredible philosophic teachings. it changed my life completely when I started reading vedic literature and realizing that asana is really SUCH a small part of the whole yogic ecosystem

This is why I am soooo picky about what teachers I go to. You’ve inspired me to do more at home like I used to

Teachers from India have been bringing yoga to the West for ages. Swami Vivekananda and Yogananda to name two giants, peace be upon them. I think they would be happy to see the spread of yoga and would be forgiving of the more shallow expressions.

To me yoga is a safe way to exercise and stretch that suits my mind and body. My understanding of yoga is that it’s a very personal practice and when it becomes competitive or we become judgmental of how other people practice then haven’t we also lost the theme? We could rename what I do and call it something other than yoga and that wouldn’t offend me but then would it not be plagiarism? The last thing that comes to mind is most people in this country only have access to education on niche topics because of videos on the internet and thank god we live in a time where we have the freedom as women to practice yoga however the hell we want! Not faulting any of your feelings at all! Just the things you made me think! 💛💛

its modern times babes Yoga can now mean different things for different ppl. we r isolated n disconnected if ppl are finding comfort in even a 30sec savasana in a "sculpt" class then hell yeaaa maybe thats the first step to getting into the real practice

This is true but at the same time everything will always get diluted when shared. Does that mean the sharing should stop?! Sharing practices that are helpful for the masses and bring spiritual elevation should be shared, with knowledge, but making it seem like it shouldn’t be diluted in any sense is getting very religious with it. There are so many forms of yoga (Hatha, Ashtanga, Nidra, Yin…) so yoga IS very vast and complex inherently. The beauty of yoga is within the variation in which it can be practiced to compliment the unique nature of the specific practitioner. What matters at the end of the day is that it’s being used for good, to spread the light, to connect, to bring closer to UNION. Not separation and gate kept.

Oh girl I’m on my hands and knees begging people to understand yoga so much deeper thank just Asana - and asana is a big part of the practice but honestly, people just aren’t ready to confront some of their shit!

i took history of yoga at montana state- modern posture yoga doesn’t come abt until 1800s by Vivekananda as a means of humanizing India in the western eye (andfirst published work by the YMCA interestly enough) Historically yoginis used asana as a pose for meditation and breath and that’s it. everything else is modern

I’ve found that the best “yoga” classes have been at any of the climbing gyms I’ve been a part of. They aren’t ever trying to sell you anything like at other more group fitness focused places. Im also in my YTT right now and I agree there’s a lot more that goes into yoga than just the physical movement. A huge part of it is spirituality and psychology which I feel can be difficult to include in the modern type of yoga that most Americans are accustomed to

As someone who has hypermobility I disconnected myself from the yoga I was doing consistently because it was hurting me physically and doing things that would injure me were encouraged BUT I’ve always been drawn towards what it can do for my mind and spirituality
