It’s a more concrete way of addressing the nuance that comes with complex childhood trauma. One of the aspects that DTD disrupts is a child’s attachment. When we are young, we perceive ourselves as being extensions of our caregivers, our sense of self has not yet developed. As we get older, we learn to differentiate ourselves from our caregivers and gain that stronger sense of self. Rory Kane lacks a predictable, continuous sense of self. When she was young, this presented as extreme separation anxiety with Bellamy. But once she lost contact with him during those years spent in the bunker, she would describe how she felt as “going crazy”. She experienced dissociative episodes, having huge blank spaces in her memory, especially when she was left alone. For six years it was like she could blink in and out of her own existence.
