Boston snow is worse than Chicago snow. Chicsgo cold is worse than Boston cold. Lived 10 years in Boston and now 10 in Chicago.

My first experience with Chicago thundersnow was the winter of ‘11 where cars where literally snowed in place on lake shore drive!

only going on my 3rd chi winter, but as far as i know, this is a really rare thing. i remember a video of *i think* jim cantore going viral because he was SO excited to experience a snow thunderstorm in person. i’ll try to find it!!

It’s a thing but not super common. It’s also weird bc it doesn’t sound quite the same if there’s a lot of snow on the ground because it has a dampening effect. It’s weird!

I grew up in NJ but went to Chicago every Christmas my entire childhood. Chicago winter is its own beast.

It’s kinda fun and the weather men and woman are so excited when it happens. Think snowstorm, but you may see lightening and hear thunder. And the snow comes down so fast like pouring rain.

meteorologist here! snow squalls in the Great Lakes can have more instability bc of the Lake Effect, which makes thunder a lot more possible than a classic snowstorm that just blankets over New England. The moisture rising from the Lakes is like a supercharger

Don't worry, Boston winter is a lot harsher - much more snow, bone chilling and damp, nor’easters that last a couple days and take out power, floods etc. Chicago can be colder for days in a row but much less snow, drier and thunder snow is only like 30 mins long , dumping snow in narrow bands.

I'm living in the Berkshires now but went to Michigan Tech (in the Keweenaw) and yeah, thunder snow is real and sometimes frightening! Midwest winter is intense and waaaay snowier than east coast winter. like 300 vs 80 inches of snow and also COLD

It's cool when it happens! Maybe once every few seasons. I'm guessing you're not familiar with lake-effect snow, either? Unless the Atlantic causes the same thing.
