If you give the advice, make the decision, or sell the risk, then you should also share in the consequences when it all goes wrong. Because most of our world is built the other way round. The banker keeps his bonus when the bank collapses. The pundit predicts disaster every single year, is wrong every single year, and keeps his column. The consultant tells your company to take a bold and dangerous leap, then flies home before anyone discovers it didn’t work. They get the upside. Somebody else quietly carries the downside. And Taleb’s point is sharper than mere fairness. It’s about trust. A person with skin in the game cannot bluff. They have to truly believe what they’re telling you, because they will suffer right alongside you if they turn out to be wrong. So the next time somebody urges you to take a risk, don’t only ask what they think. Ask what happens to them if they’re wrong. Because the safest house is always the one built by someone who has to live in it.
