I was never afraid of the dark. Until one night when I realized the dark was afraid of me too. I was home alone. Around midnight, I turned off the hallway light and walked toward my room. Halfway there, I heard footsteps behind me. I stopped. They stopped too. I turned around. Nothing. I laughed at myself and kept walking. Then the footsteps started again. Closer this time. I ran into my room and locked the door. I turned on my lamp. Everything was normal. Then the power went out. My room became completely black. I grabbed my phone and turned on the flashlight. That’s when I noticed something strange. The flashlight only lit up the floor. Everything above it was still completely dark. I pointed it toward my doorway. The darkness looked different there. Almost like something was standing inside it. I whispered, “Who’s there?” Something whispered back. My voice. I froze. Then my phone screen went black. I could still hear breathing. Right beside me. I didn’t move. A few seconds later, my phone turned back on. The flashlight came back. The doorway was empty. I ran downstairs and waited outside until my parents came home. The next morning, I checked my phone. There was one new video in my camera roll. I hadn’t recorded anything. The video showed my bedroom from the corner. It showed me sleeping. Then the screen slowly turned black. A voice whispered: “Don’t turn the lights off tonight.” The video ended. I haven’t slept in complete darkness since.
