@madlythunder: The Greenland Shark inhabits the North Atlantic and Arctic Sea. Capable of living and often found in depths up to almost 3,000 meters, inside the Bathypelagic Zone (the Midnight Zone) where no sunlight can reach and pressure can rise to almost 300x that of sea level. Temperatures in this area range from 28°F-45°F, passing freezing temperatures. The shark’s size is comparable to the Great White Shark as it averages about 22 feet in length and 2200 pounds. The max speed it can achieve is 1.7 mph, with a cruising speed of about 0.75 mph. These slow speeds are due to the slow metabolism and energy conservation they require. From this, Greenland Sharks live exceedingly long lives, averaging at least 272 years. The oldest recorded to be up to 512 years old using radiocarbon dating from it’s eye lenses, making the species the longest living vertebrae on earth. Latched onto nearly every Greenland sharks’ eyes is a parasitic copepod called Ommatokoita elongata, which is believed to render it almost entirely blind. The life of a Greenland Shark is effectively condemned to an agonizingly long and lethargic existence in the nothingness of the dark, freezing deep sea, blinded. #greenlandshark
