As a hotel manager it sounds like the front desk didn’t fully check you in or checked you in to the wrong room and they are trying to figure out how they need to fix it

Former resort front desk and general manager here. They definitely mixed up which room you were in and were trying to figure out who you are without raising any flags. Scary part is sometimes they’ll give out new cards to the next guest checking in and the card will work. Always use deadbolt, chain and whatever else is there to lock the door. The normal door lock will let anyone in who has a programmed key card.
