@whileyouwonder: ✨ Ever catch yourself looking away while you’re the one talking? Guess what, according to research…neurotypicals don’t.💡 💛 Also… pre-release pricing is live for the Autistic Self-Identification Program, link’s in my bio 🎉🌻 Neurotypicals often hold eye contact while they speak to check reactions. Autistic people usually look away to think, manage sensory input, or find words more easily. Just remember, you don’t have to force eye contact to be connected. But…. if this is something you do and you’ve been wondering if you’re autistic… it’s definitely something to add to the list ✅ 📖 Doherty-Sneddon, G., Bruce, V., Bonner, L., Longbotham, S., & Doyle, C. (2002). Look away to think: Cognitive load and eye movement. Developmental Science, 5(4), 433–443. https://doi.org/10.1111/1467-7687.00285 🧠 As always, what I share is based on my experience as an autistic autism assessor and speech pathologist, the lived experiences of the autistic community, and what I’ve seen across 8 years of autism assessments. These insights reflect common themes I’ve observed in 'clinical' settings, assessment conversations, and client storytelling. It may not apply to everyone, and research is still catching up on a lot of this! While this content is not intended as clinical advice, it draws on my lived and professional experience to make space for shared understanding and further discussion. I’d love to see more research in this space, and I’m always open to chatting with or supporting researchers – especially autistic researchers – who feel called to explore and build on these insights. There’s so much more to discover together!

I cannot look at people when I'm speaking. When they're speaking, however? I will apparently stare directly into their souls and usually get accused of flirting or witchcraft. I call it active listening, but to each their own 😅

I do this and sometimes the person I speak to turns around to look at whatever I’m looking at. I wonder if this is why I enjoy talking to someone much more when I’m driving? I feel more comfortable then.

This is why I prefer visiting with people on a walk or a drive where we are side by side talking and there’s lots of other things to look at

I actually can’t bear feeling like I’m being stared at while I’m talking. I don’t want to be perceived like that.

this, plus fear of displeasing people, because trauma... a person's micro expressions terrify me because if I see just one negative one then I'm battling my nervous system screaming that they hate my guts.

Is this an ADHD thing? Because I look away and have ADHD and figured it was because I immediately lose my train of thought because of my scatterbrain

I even find it uncomfortable watching people on screen looking each other in the eye. Look at the Wicked Cast singing to each other. My eyeballs ache watching them. Drew Barrymore interviews eyeball to eyeball and so close. I find it fascinating but so uncomfortable. I was diagnosed last year at 52 😁

I did this recently and the person I was talking to turned and looked behind them because they were trying to figure out what (or who) I was looking at.

Does one look away less if they are closer to the person? Like immediate family or life long friends?
