@h2omammals: Orcas that don’t have straight dorsal fins aren’t ill or depressed. Male orcas will have bent fins because they spend so much time at the surface with their trainers and their 6 foot dorsal fins cannot handle the lack of pressure. Their flukes (tail) curl in the wild and in captivity. That is population specific, because some orcas do not have curved flukes. Female dorsal fins and flukes don’t curl because they are much smaller, by nearly half the length. The most they’ll get is a slight lean. The first orca is Orkid, a 37 year old female orca. i hate how sea world tries to make it seem like dorsal collapse is normal in the wild when it only happens to 1-5% of wild orcas and that’s only in extreme, rare, and specific instances, while almost all sea world whales have collapsed fins ITS NOT NORMAL

It’s a lack of pressure while swimming from either side. In captivity they don’t attain the speed consistently enough. Also happens in extreme trauma in the wild.

spending more time at the surface is not natural. An inability to dive to depths and experience natural movement is not okay or healthy long term which is why dorsal drooping is seen in the wild in extreme trauma. This is extreme trauma however you want to label it as depression or not or anything else
