This year's Berlin (12.9% DNF) proved something... that even experienced runners do not know how to manage their effort for the conditions. You are 100% right that ultras are more technical but the real problem is that runners get so focused on a goal times that they fail to manage effort appropriately... the toughest part of altitude is that your body's max and resting heart rates shift (lower max, higher resting HR) thus your HR zones shift so even measuring effort by HR can go sideways. VO2MAX drops by around 15% at 10k ft (less if acclimatized but it still drops) and thus if you attempt to run at normal paces, you'll burn out due to over exertion.

Nobody ever talks about the elevation 😫. Did a 50km in Whistler w/ 10k ft of vert. Took me 8+ hours. 1000% an ultra lol.

isnt anything over a marathon technically an ultra. theres one at bamburgh castle, its trails but only 27.2 miles, so not even 50k, id still say ultra

Great video. I’m super excited to run my first 50k at the Clearwater running festival in January. I humbly acknowledge that it’s just the tip of the “ultra” iceberg. But ultimately it’s the first step over 26.2 and it means something.
