It’s gothic fiction it’s both motherly love and romantic love.

I think it’s weird that folks are ignoring the context of his previous works, like Shape of Water? Del Toro is defo into monster romance, he made a whole film about it.

the dress was so obviously modeled on the bride of Frankenstein that I kind of expected her to made into his bride in the movie, that they were going to go that route. and then maybe have her forget the monster and reject him after the procedure, and that's why he was so angry at Victor

It was definitely romantic whaaaaat?? There was Oedipal elements here with victor and his mother so I think her being maternal but also romantically interested makes sense within the movie. But omg I thought it was very clear to me she was INTO it

it feels disingenuous to suggest there's NO intentional romantic undertone between Elizabeth and the Creature/Monster. even without any knowledge of the text or past movies, it's very clear to ME there was intentional romantic nods.

"My place was never in this world. I sought and longed for something I could not quite name. But in you, I found it. To be lost and to be found, that is the lifespan of love." She loved him, people trying to gaslight Megan about something that's in the movie... (It's not subtext, it's plainly stated)

I don’t think it’s fair to compare her first dismissing Victor for impropriety and “running away” with the creature as she was dying. Her whole thing was being a misunderstood creature herself, ahe was bound by society and their notions of womanhood and propriety but she was freed in death. A freedom that the creature is denied so that little bit at the end I disagree with

As others have said, I think it was and wasn’t. They were kindred spirits. The Creature and Elizabeth felt like interesting mirrors.

Victor was jealous of Elizabeth’s feelings towards the creature an punished him for it

I don’t think there’s a good faith interpretation of this that wouldn’t recognize the romantic tension

I don’t think Elizabeth as a character was romanticly interested. She met him with the mind of a child. It’s too pdf. I think men kept thrusting romantic ideals on her and in the creature she was free of those expectations because he was more pure.

Wow, I never read it as Elizabeth having any romantic interest in the creature, exactly for the reason you mentioned: she’s intelligent and strong-minded, she wouldn’t fall for someone with a baby’s mind. For me, it felt more like a protective reaction, a kind of unconscious mirroring, someone beautiful but without will.

Pre-romantic maybe. Like they finally met someone who if society had let them could have found love together. Something like that.

I’m pretty sure the creature didn’t develop any interest for a romantic relationship yet. He’s just longing for a benevolent connection.

I did really enjoy the movie but also agree with this read. It was romantic AND maternal. I feel like preserving the creature to be the one to kill Elizabeth and/or William, it could have invited the audience to see Elizabeth’s love for the creature for the savior complex that it was and also echoed the creature’s observations about the seeming inevitability of violence even when it’s not necessarily malicious.

i think that elisabeth is pretty shallow, but i don’t think her affection for the creature is hypocritical. a relationship with victor would simply be another man in the society she feels trapped in. being with the creature would be an escape. i thought we were meant to understand that she is exclusively seen through the eyes of men and therefore distrust her depiction, although the film didn’t explore it well enough imo

Diluting Elizabeth’s religious and scientific interests in the film into a modern day “girl boss” read feels deeply misguided.

The Oedipal stuff is in this really not subtle is it? People need to go back and read some foundational Greek Tragedy and they might spot it better. But that’s not the reference that Mary Shelley was deploying in the novel - that’s my beef with it as an adaptation.

Reposting my comment here because it’s more relevant here. First and foremost, your critique is completely valid. However, I don’t really think it’s fair to use the marketing (ie. Posters) as evidence of the thematic intentions of the film. That is purely Netflix driven, not Del Toro driven. Netflix wants it to read as a romance, but I personally didn’t get that from the actual film.
