It’s like somebody said, “What if we built a town for people who gave up halfway through building the first town?” Homer’s the kind where dreams go to winter, then decide, “Nah, let’s just stay dead.” You’ve got fishermen who smell like bait, artists who smell like patchouli, and retirees who smell like regret. It’s like Burning Man had a baby with Deadliest Catch and then that baby got homeschooled by the Department of Fish and Game. Every shop on the Spit sells the same thing: overpriced hoodies and hot-glued beach debris. The only difference between the art galleries and the dump is the dump doesn’t pretend it’s curated. You drive into Homer and the GPS just sighs and says, “Buddy, you’re on your own.” They call it the end of the road, and they’re proud of that. “Welcome to Homer: you passed Hope a long time ago.” You go to a bar in Homer and every woman is named either Crystal or Dawn. Step outside so she can chain-smoke Marlboros with one hand and nut-tap you with the other. That’s first base; second base is making excuses while she outfishes you. And let’s talk about the weather. Homer gets so much fog you can’t tell if it’s mist off Kachemak Bay or just the residents’ collective sigh. Homer’s one of those towns that thinks it’s deep. “We’re a community of creatives and free spirits.” No, you’re a community of people ran out of gas money and decided to start a farmers’ market. But I’ve got to hand it to you, Homer: you’ve got the best view in Alaska… mostly because it points away from Homer. #homer #homeralaska #alaska #alaskalife
