People in these comments are confusing lithium METAL with lithium-ion batteries. Industrial battery recycling systems are engineered specifically for thermal runaway events. The drop tank is likely a dielectric fluid/mineral oil containment system or another suppression medium designed to isolate oxygen, absorb heat, and prevent propagation to nearby cells. Even water-based suppression is sometimes intentionally used in Li-ion fires because cooling adjacent cells is more important than the initial reaction once runaway has already started. Also, pure water is not highly conductive — conductivity mainly comes from dissolved ions/minerals. Multi-million dollar recycling facilities do not randomly install emergency suppression systems without testing basic electrochemistry and fire behavior first.
