As I was listening to your story, I couldn't help but think that you treated that man like family. I hope that if I ever have a medical emergency, I'm surrounded by people like you.

The ER that released him should have caught that on a CT and admitted him. They’re too fast to dismiss and discharge people who should not be.

Absolutely should have gone in sooner, but you could have never known that, and you can’t force him.

Instead of thinking you should’ve done something sooner, remember you got him to care when he didn’t want to go. You got him to comfort & care instead of him dying alone in a hotel room. You are the angel in this story.

No don’t you dare blame yourself. This is a common thing with men. You can go look up stories of wives and sisters etc, trying to get them to go to the hospital them being stubborn and putting up a fight and it costing them their lives.

My bf died in July 2023 @ 41 yrs old because he ignored his nagging back pain for 3 days straight until he couldn't anymore and I had to rush him to the ER. Massive heart failure.

Costume Designer here and your level of care is almost unheard of, especially in the indie scene. He passed with someone who advocated for him and urged him to seek proper professional help despite his stubbornness

I am an RN. You handled this situation so professionally and astutely. I hope you feel good knowing you couldn’t have done anything more than you did. I’m terribly sorry for everyone, how tragic.

I know it’s almost impossible but please, please reassure yourself that you did everything you could. The sentiment among ER nurses is that if a man comes in on his terms and not after being dragged in his by wife, it’s probably a really big emergency. That “rule” comes from hundreds of thousands/millions of anecdotal experiences. As his boss, you did so much more than what your job requirements were. You didn’t live in his body to feel his symptoms and you didn’t live with him through all his medical history. You made a series of good, solid decisions based on the info available to you. You did everything right. Ending up with a shit outcome doesn’t mean you didn’t do everything correctly. If you notice that you can’t shake some of the darkness in the next little while I’d really encourage you reach out and talk to someone. Please be kind to yourself 💛

As a Registered Nurse of 40 years. You did everything right. You left him with no choice but to get medical help and that’s all you could do. If he did have a bowel obstruction it sounds like his bowel possibly ruptured and things can happen quickly when it gets to that point.

You can’t blame yourself. He was in the ER Sat. They are sadly rushing people out of ERs now and not listening to people. That’s not on you.

I’m gonna repeat what others have said, it’s not your fault, you couldn’t have prevented this. He was an adult, you treated him like an adult, he made the choice not to hear the concern of those around him. You could literally not do more than you did! In fact, you did much more than most people would in this situation. This doesn’t change the outcome nor does it remedy your heartsick, but you cannot force adults to do that which they refuse to do. I wish you peace over the grief and comfort in that you did all you could.

So sorry that happened. You tried to get him to go, but some people are in denial. Same thing happened to my dad, he wasn’t feeling well & had lost a lot of weight. I tried to convince him to go to the ET but he refused. A week later he had a heart attack & didn’t make it. Afterwards his best friend just blamed me. Not fun.

I am sorry. I checked in on someone on my team who disappeared. I went to his house, he was a wreck. His dad died of a heart attack. We cried together, and I called my therapist and he became her patient (thank god). Corporate HR read me the riot act for doing that. Then another crew member vanished. I went to her house, and sat with her in her kitchen as she told me her stituation. It was a case of DV and very scary. Sometimes caring about another person’s well being is more important than your job. You did your utmost to help him. You might always regret that you could not save him, but I promise that you will never regret that you tried your best 💔

John Candy toughed it out in his last movie in Mexico. He was worried he wouldn’t get insured in future movies if he said anything. He didn’t make it either.
