@teachmedoc: Lego MRI play sets make a big difference for kids before they get their MRI. Traditionally small kids needing an MRI get general anesthesia because of the need to hold still for long periods of time, be in a small space, and with lots of noise. Very cool intervention! #MRI #lego #kidshealth #playtherapy

I asked myself, “What’s up with doctors only discovering all these things about kids NOW?!” Oh… it’s not just Male Docs anymore. 😅

I suspect this might be less effective on adults (not a 0% reduction but definitely less than 43%), maybe due to differences in neuroplasticity

According to my doctor I was the youngest kid to never need sedation! I was three and misunderstood what they meant when explaining how sedation works and thought if I moved a giant arm would come out of the machine and stab me with a needle

its insane that we are mass sedating children instead of taking the time to explain whats going to happen in an age appropriate way

Play scenarios help so much. I used to play pretend dentist with my son as a toddler for the same reason in the week leading up to his appointments. The 1st appointment after I did it was so drastically better than the one before it that even the dentist commented on it.

My kiddos has CP and we have had a ton of procedures and medical tests. We have constructed pretend med equipment to help him understand. Play helps dymistify so much. I think adults would benefit a lot from social stories that explain what is going to happen. People are helped when they know what is going on.

i wish my 8 yr old had gotten this set when they had an MRI, they looked like they were on the green mile going in. is it possible to purchase this or does it need to come from a hospital?

The first time I got an MRI as an adult it freaked me out, which was funny because I had several as a child and never had an issue, probably because I had much more space back then

I wonder if it's because the kids get to control all the people and equipment pieces, makes them feel agency

Education leaves less room for the imagination, which will run wild in that environment if the patient is panicked. This ED social worker agrees, adults could use this too!

I teach college intro science, and like… humans are curious! We like to know how things work, and have new situations explained in accessible and caring ways. Kids, adults, everyone likes knowing what is going to happen.

Play is absolutely the best way to process and practice new experiences. That is its primary purpose as a behavior. Adults would absolutely also benefit from playsets like these!

I think I'm the only person who falls asleep almost every time I get an MRI. It's like, in a stressful life, it's strangely calming.

Imagine that, you show them what will happen and why and they are magically able to handle it better. But really It’s been well known for a while that just explaining and demonstrating something improves success rates in pretty much any stressful task (for any age group). As far as I recall the mirror neuron reaction trains your brain and nervous system in what is expected to happen. Your brain links triggers and reactions, so a demonstration or even better a demonstration and practice run gives you an opportunity to set a positive or neutral nervous system association whereas in the heat of the experience it’s significantly more likely to set a negative association. A negative association is generally much easier to protect against than to remove.

I wish I had one of these as kid (have to get a yearly MRI). I had to be sedated for the first 2, then it was no big deal.

I would’ve loved this. Had cancer as a kid and had quite a few MRIs over the years as result. My last one was in high school because they were worried that some of the treatment might’ve caused long term brain damage. I did much better with MRIs than needles, but it wasn’t always pleasant either.
