In tribal ceremonies it became a channel for the spirits of the ancestors. In Greek theatre it revealed the hidden archetypes of the psyche. In shamanic rituals it allowed the healer to cross the threshold between the seen and the unseen. A mask was the external form of an internal truth, the symbol of everything the human being could not yet face with a naked soul. Every civilisation understood this paradox. When you wear a mask, you do not hide. You reveal what the conscious mind denies. You step into a role, an identity, an emotion that was always inside you. Rage, sorrow, courage, wisdom. Masks carried the encoded language of the collective unconscious. They exposed the invisible patterns that rule our behaviour, our fears, our destiny. Today the masks are digital. Social, emotional, psychological. People wear curated identities, controlled reactions, rehearsed versions of themselves. They hide wounds behind performance. They silence truth behind survival.
