In the original all quiet on the western front, the ending was Paul getting shot by a sniper in his trench after peeking out, which I believe was a better ending

The worst part of this movie wasn’t in the middle. It was at the beginning when he didn’t realize that the military uniforms were being recycled from dead soldiers. Just ripped off the name patches and gave to new recruits

the original all quiet on the western front REALLY gets me. it was made in collaboration with actual world war one veterans and included their lived experiences. the scenes of marching soldiers was done with extras that were actually ex german soldiers. its just so much more haunting to me knowing that

Truffaut's point (I think) is that films that want to be anti war show war scenes that are often shot like actions scenes which can glorify the actions show, or even when they show despair and vain fights, they show heroism from some characters (films like Fury really don't feel antiwar for example)

The argument isn’t anti-war means “war is bad,” many films say war is bad. It’s can you make and anti-war film that doesn’t inject beauty and morality and wisdom into war. That doesn’t glorify the “learning” of war. That doesn’t end with “now we know.”

Every war film is a ”anti war” film and a ”pro war film”. There are people who see the GoPro footage in Ukraina and want to go fight. There are others who see the same footage and feel dread and disgust. So even a film like this can and has inspired people to fight.

I think Francis Ford Coppola said it best. A true anti war film is when most of the film we focus on a family living a beautiful life. They have peace, natural anger, and all emotions we usually have, and the final 30 minutes is the devastation of war. And I agree with this way of making an anti war film because it gives us an even bigger connection with the characters.

The more I think about it, the more I agree anti war movies do not exist. Show me the horrors of war and you will motivate people to "fight" against it.
