Jane Austen deals in subtle. It’s the time period. I was dating a guy who was trying to read it and he didn’t get the subtle facetiousness and humor in the first line of the book.

It's all in subtext and lingering glances. Also it helps to know something about the era in which it was written. without all the right context, I can understand why it wouldn't hit the same way.

ok, here's my opinion as someone so obsessed that I now read P&P variations ALL the time. The mini series is as close to the book as you're going to get. If you really want to fall in love with the story though, watch the Keira Knightley version. It's definitely more romantic and less subtle. It was my first exposure to P&P and it started my love for P&P which lead to me appreciating the mini series and then reading the book. Then, when you're ready to explore variations, let me know, and I can send you down that rabbit hole!! 🤣🤣🤣

Speaking as a former librarian, if you haven't read the book, the 2005 version is more digestible for newbies. The way it's filmed is stunning and makes it very easy to fall into the story. The Colin Firth version is for more for the older crowds, classic literature nerds, massive Colin Firth fans, and those who watched it when it first aired. There's also the Lizzie Bennett Diaries on YouTube which is a fabulous modern adaptation. Start with either that or the 2005 version and you'll get it.

Darcy is absolutely head over heals for Elizabeth, but he is not socially allowed to be with her. So he acts like he doesn't like her and she thinks he hates her. She doesn't like him because he is so rude dismissive. Look between the lines at Darcy's actions instead of what he says.

I adore the one with Colin Firth, for me it’s closest to Austen’s writing and the subtlety that was required of romance during that time. However, the 2005 with Kiera Knightly is probably going to be a better pacing? The actor who plays Darcy definetly plays home as more awkward than cross and since it’s shorter it’s faster paced and more expressive. My intro to Austen was actually Sense and Sensibility (the one with Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman) and that is an excellent movie.

Try the 05 movie. It's visually gorgeous and Darcy's yearn game is strong (imo). The series follows the book better but the book is still way better. I also just...didn't really like Lizzy in the series. 😬 I tried! I didn't read the book until I was an adult and I loved it when I listened via audiobook.
