Planting tomatoes vertically (like a “fence”!) is a great way to conserve space in the garden and make for easy harvesting! It’s almost tomato time in my zone (5a/6b last frost mid May)! Here’s how we plant ours to form a nice thick tomato “fence” that’s easy to harvest from! 🌱 we start them about 7 weeks before last frost (don’t start too early, tomatoes resent if they start to bloom in their trays and also hate cold ground so we usually end up planting a week to 10 days after our “last frost”) 🍅 we start on the 3/4” soil blocks (since we start a lot they take up less space on our heat mat this way but you could also use the 1-1/2” blocker) 🌱after about 2 weeks we move them up into the 2” blocks where they really take off 🍅if they’re looking like they’re exploding from their blocks (see the roots coming out?) we pot up! I haven’t saved up for the big 4” soil blocker yet but we had someone donate hundreds of one gallon pots a couple years ago so we just pot up into those. They aren’t in there long, 2 weeks or so but in case we get late cold temps it gives us some wiggle room so they don’t get root bound! 🌱 from there we plant out by burying some waxed twine directly into the planting hole and winding it up the tomato plant. Attached to a horizontal beam from an old fence, we continue wrapping the twine as the plant grows 🍅removing the lower leaves and some of the suckers helps keep things tidy and neat and easy to see for harvesting, while increasing circulation What do you use to support tomatoes?? I can almost taste them now 🤤 #tomatoes #gardening #gardenhack #climbingplants #verticalgarden #victorygarden #growyourown #gardenhack #gardentok #foryou
