Look into poly crops. we combined some this year. it’s way better for the land, and did better than the fields that were fertilized heavily. Take’s alittle more work but it’s definitely worth it. All the different plant families makes everything that’s already in the soil more usable. Soil diversity is key.

The 02 drought started in 99 and ended in 2010 for me. That's when I started soil testing every field. When the 21 drought hit we kept our Phos program and lowered N to reflect yield potential. Can always dribble N on if it rains. I discovered our durum varieties are not desert durum, it was my worst crop in the drought. 40 bu barley, 9 bu durum.

Another thing you could do to help financially would be safety the truck and trailers and do some custom hauling under someone else and book your grain to haul yourself through the business and you can write off the bill on the farm

It might be cheaper to Chem fallow the whole farm and go on a holiday instead of farming the ground. I've started running numbers and gave up. we are probly going to keep it lean. peas and barley (i'm 2 hrs from feedlot alley) very little fertillizer and only spend money on Chem to try to prevent my already messy land from getting messier.

Can you explain crop insurance to me? As an Australian farming we have no such thing only for fire and hail here.

have you considered sustainable farming and using a tea for fert rather the full synthetic fert? can lower inputs massively.

Do you ever grow oats? They can be tricky for bushel weight and maybe I’m biased cause if they end up light we can feed them. I did good with them this year but we are also somewhat close to an oat mill

100 billion cash receipts in Saskatchewan. 8.3 billion was above input. Insane business strategy.

Beyond what you’re asking, how does one deal with the frustration. The constant contradictions: the world is starving but there’s huge surplus so prices low, and low commodity prices but ever rising inputs, how does one purge the pent up exhasperation with all of this?

Having come out of about 4 years of consecutive drought, stick with what performs well in dry. Durum, Mustard, lentils. Not the time to try new things. Soil test.

My neighbors here in Easter Colorado are going back to wheat-fallow-wheat-fallow. No fertilizer or nothing. Praying for rain and keeping no expenses besides fuel. We can’t make it on row crops here.
