Niger has one of the highest fertility rates in the world, and early marriage is very common — many girls are married before the age of 18. Access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities is very limited for many women, especially in rural areas. In recent years, NGOs and grassroots movements have been working to empower women — promoting girls’ education, fighting against child marriage, improving reproductive health access, and encouraging women’s participation in politics. Significant moves have been made to enshrine age limits on marriage to be 18, making sure all girls below the age of 18 get an education, and pushing tougher laws on gender based violence.
