Thanks for sharing your truths. I’m from the Bay & ive been explaining to my mom that ALL white people have to learn or taught to be Anti-Racist.. even her most sincere white friends have to do the work to stay conscious of the habits & privilege that’s been ingrained in their reality.. & she always disagreed that ALL white ppl have to learn this, until recently. She thought I was saying all white ppl are racist but no.. even in “the diverse Bay Area” — it takes real intention & work to not fall for the trickery.

As a black person thats all i been trying to get people to admit you may not be actively racist but if your aware that you could be subconsciously because of how you where raised that ok as long as you realize it and try to avoid it no person can be mad at that black or white

being willing to care and do better is all that can be asked of you, I'd never expect someone to meat shield me in front of cops, but I appreciate my friends crazy enough to be like "hey! he's an American citizen you can't treat him like that!"

My Mom explained it like this when she was a teacher: “I’m right handed so it’s natural for me to unconsciously address the right side of the class more. That doesn’t mean I’m biased against the left side of the class, or that I’m a bad person. I just have to be more conscious about addressing them.” The school board didn’t listen to her (it was early 00’s) lol but still a brilliant explanation.

The visual of her gleefully singing the n word in the car is taking me out 😂 I’m black and had to lecture my dad at the On the Run concert to not lash out if we are next to someone shouting N word lyrics (Jay Z’s favorite word). I am (unfortunately) used to that word being used so casually by people of every background from the high school I attended and the jobs I’ve worked so I barely flinch at the usage but it does make me uncomfortable.
