@jasonchumusic: There’s another interesting tie between Hawai’i and Japan - in 1885, the last king of Hawai’i, King David Kalākaua visited Japan to request that the nation send laborers to work in the islands. The Meiji government had a ban on emigration, worried that exporting manual labor would cause outsiders to look down on their nation. But the King was successful, and in February 1885, 153 Japanese came to Hawai’i to work sugarcane and pineapple harvests. By 1910, nearly 100,000 Japanese were living in the islands - the largest ethnic group there. It’s likely these close ties between Japan and Hawai’i are why Nachi Mikami, Akira Toriyama’s wife, was aware of the name Kamehameha when it came time to name Goku’s iconic attack. #dragonballz #animetiktok #nativehawaiian #nikkei #akiratoriyama
