@ancienthistorytoday: Temple of Apollo, Pompeii – The Oldest Sanctuary Beneath Mount Vesuvius 🌋🏛️ Long before Pompeii became a thriving Roman city, this sacred site was already devoted to Apollo, god of light, music, and prophecy. The Temple of Apollo stands as one of the oldest religious structures in Pompeii, first built in the 6th century BCE when Greek settlers influenced the region. Its architecture beautifully blends Italic tradition with Greek elegance — a reflection of the cultural fusion that shaped southern Italy. The temple once dominated the city’s Forum, its bronze statue of Apollo (seen here aiming his bow) facing the rising sun, symbolising divine insight and order. A smaller statue of Diana, his twin sister, once accompanied him, forming a sacred pair. The altar in front was where citizens offered sacrifices and prayers, seeking guidance and protection for their families and the city. Behind the ruins, the looming presence of Mount Vesuvius reminds us of the disaster that froze this world in time. When the volcano erupted in 79 CE, the temple — like all of Pompeii — was buried beneath pumice and ash, preserving its stones, statues, and even traces of ritual activity. Today, standing here connects us to a civilization that looked upon the same mountain with both awe and faith. #Pompeii #AncientRome #RomanHistory #GreekInfluence #Archaeology

Ancient History Today :
Few visitors realise this: the bronze statue of Apollo you see today is a replica — the original was discovered here in 1817 and is now preserved in the Naples Archaeological Museum to protect it from weathering. The copy allows visitors to experience the temple just as ancient Pompeians once did.
