🚨 João Cancelo on why didn’t all Portugal players didn’t celebrate Ronaldo’s retirement the way Argentina celebrated Messi’s retirement: 🗣️ João Cancelo: “Honestly, I think people already know the answer. They just don’t want to accept it. When Messi retired, I watched the entire Argentina squad come together to celebrate him. Players were posting pictures, writing emotional messages and showing the world how much they loved and respected him. But when Cristiano announced his retirement, suddenly everybody expected Portugal players to behave the same way. Why? I personally don’t understand it. And let me say something that will probably make Ronaldo fans angry. I don’t think Cristiano is the kind of person people should constantly be forced to celebrate. Yes, he is one of the greatest footballers in history. Yes, he has scored incredible goals and won important trophies for Portugal. But football is bigger than individual achievements. Sometimes I feel Cristiano’s ego is bigger than his understanding of what a team is supposed to represent. Everything has to be about him. His records. His achievements. His recognition. His position as the greatest. And honestly, that is something I have never liked. Look at Messi. He doesn’t need everybody around him to constantly remind the world that he is special. He doesn’t need to be the centre of every conversation. He plays football, respects his teammates and allows people to appreciate him naturally. That’s the difference. People should stop comparing the way Argentina celebrated Messi to the way Portugal reacted to Ronaldo. You cannot force genuine affection. And just because somebody has given everything to a national team doesn’t mean every player must have the same personal relationship with him. Ronaldo fans can insult me if they want. They can call me jealous. They can say I don’t respect Portuguese history. But I won’t pretend that I see Cristiano the same way they do. Being Portugal’s greatest player doesn’t automatically make you Portugal’s greatest teammate. And I think that’s something his fans will never understand.”
