@whoisadiv: during his acceptance speech Zohran Mamdani stated that NYC was a city built by immigrants, and while that may hold some truth it's far from the reality of America. America was built by the labor of enslaved black people who spent centuries under slave labor building the nation that is the USA today. Through the work and fights of Black Americans immigrants were able to come to America in droves and have access to many things that black Americans fought for to insinuate that NYC a city where the ports, wall street, town hall, streets cleared all done by black Americans was built by "immigrants" is just incorrect I have campaigned for Zohran and I think he'll make a great mayor I just think this needs to be succinctly addressed and he myth that everyone in America is an immigrant is a lie. #zohranmamdani #BlackTikTok #immigrants #nyctiktok

“They” keep eliminating Black Americans from the conversation until they want support to march and fight. 🙃

People will call you “woke” but natives and black Americans never get credit. The Harlem renaissance shaped NYC (those were black American people m)

People forget there’s a literal team of professional writers of his speeches. Every word used saw a hundred eyes and hands on it but we and indigenous people were STILL left out of the speech 🙃

he made it clear he's for immigrants. They're trying to use us and erase us. Even in the movies, BLK American characters are played many times by BLK immigrants, many BLK immigrant restaurants can claim "black owned business". They are writing is out of REAL history. We have got to come together as a people to do something about this. I'm disgusted..

I don’t think he intentionally left it out. I think he was doing it as a response to all the things that has been going on plus him being immigrant himself just made it seem like that makes a lot more sense. We are all aware of black Americans built America. It would’ve been a lot better if he just said immigrants have contributed to New York City but yeah, I agree. People are flipping out about this. I think it he should be addressed but at the same time I want the authoritarian leader out of office and i feel like that’s more of a priority than anything else right now.

We are constantly deprioritized in this country which leads many immigrants to believe we are lazy because they came here and benefited off the sacrifices we made for civil rights

Black Americans were ESSENTIAL to the foundational growth of American in its early days. To include all that you just mentioned. But immigrants built on that foundation as they came in the later times. Each, in its own time, collectively contributed to making America.

And let’s talk about how Southern Black Americans invented and changed culture in NYC and Harlem as a result of the Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance.

I didn’t see any immigrants in NY until the late 80’s. The only ones we know of were the Europeans coming in to Ellis island.

Thank you for this. Immigrants absolutely have a tremendous impact on this country. HOWEVER, this comment erases Indigenous and Black Americans. BAs made this county an industrial super power based on free labor. Also, without BAs many Immigrants of color wouldn't be in this country. You can't have the Immigration Act without the Civil Rights Act.
