I grew up in a similar environment. Parents were too depressed to care. They didn't want to keep the mess, they just didn't want to deal with it. I kept my room clean though, it was awful and effects certain behaviors I have still to this day.

my dad was a hoarder. when we helped him move he was so offended we wore masks and gloves. his landlord wanted him gone so bad he told him he didn't have to clean up because he hired a professional

I have an issue with hoarding clothes and shoes. It is neat and not a dirty hoard, but it stems from growing up VERY poor and not having clothes or shoes that fit or having only a few items in a certain size.

I have family living with me, I was sick for 1 yr and my house is destroyed. One of the problems is you cannot move any of their “possessions” or all hell breaks out. It is mental but I cannot put them on the street

Hoarding is OCD because it’s about control. When things go missing, you feel as if you aren’t in control of your own possessions

I have a family lineage of hoarders. Im the only one who cant stand stuff. But! All of them were/are meticulously clean. Like it sparkled, they cared for these mountains of things. Everything was washed weekly. What kind of hoarding is that?!? Seriously asking.

People see sentimental value in things they hoard, shopping addictions, telling themselves they might need an item later down the road etc, that’s what I’ve kind of got from hoarding
