Leandro Andrés Bertazzo was described as a “beautiful person with a great smile.” He was 42 years old and (according to early reports) a former commercial pilot in Chile. Though the student pilot was a bystander who didn’t have to be needlessly traumatized, I hope we can give his memory grace and see this as something that happened to him, rather than something he did to himself. Sometimes even to live is an act of courage. He showed no signs he planned to do this, according to the director of this flight school. He had flown with another student earlier that day. Pilots being too afraid to seek professional help for anxiety, d3pression, & other mental health struggles out of fear they’ll lose their flight privileges/medical clearance (which can take months or sometimes years to reinstate) is a MAJOR issue in the aviation industry. Pilots who stay silent about their struggles don’t make them, their passengers, or our skies safer. But their careers force them to make an impossible choice: risk your livelihood or say nothing. It doesn’t have to be that way. “Mental health and well-being are critical [components] of the safe performance of pilots and other aviation employees.
