Hi, it's Juliana! “Why does my parent get angry when I block them from hitting me?” Here are my thoughts. So a parent tries to hit their child, and the child blocks it. You and I might look at this and think: “The child is trying to protect themselves.” But narcissistic parents often don't see it that way. Their thought process is more like: 1.) "I'm the parent." 2.) "You're MY child." That “MY” is important here. They're not thinking about you as a child. They're thinking about you as THEIR child, like you belong to them. Because they don't see you as a completely separate person. They see you as an extension of themselves. Which brings us to: 3.) Therefore, I can do what I want to you. So when you block them, they don't focus on why your hands came up. They focus on the fact that you stopped them from doing something they believe they have the right to do. Think about it like this. Imagine we're sitting at dinner and you go to take a drink from your glass. I grab your wrist or slap your hand away and say: “You can't drink yet.” How angry would you be with me? How disgusted would you be that I thought I had the right to control whether or not you could take a drink from your own glass? Well, that's more or less what's going on here. In their mind, you're not protecting yourself. You're taking control of something they believe belongs to them: you. And for a parent who believes being your parent gives them ownership over you, you deciding what they can and can't do to you is one of the most offensive things you can “do to them.” If you need someone to talk to about all of this, you can always send me a DM or schedule a session with me. My team and I help people heal from narcissistic abuse, and many of us have experienced it ourselves, so we're here if you need us. To your healing, Juliana ❤️‍🩹
